Brief

We were tasked with producing an educational tablet game for 10-14yr olds. The possible topics of learning were from the STEM initiative...Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. We went for earth science as we felt it was the most relevant and under-utilised.

Description

Water Works is an educational game built in Unity3D. Designed to run on ipad and android tablets.

"Buy your land, construct a water system and use pipes to supply water to towns! A dynamic weather system has an effect on rainfall and droughts can dry out your reservoirs! Clean a town's dirty water before releasing it back into the river! Do all this and more whilst learning about the water cycle and meeting some interesting characters!"

My role

I had several tasks during this project. Being the only full time designer, I wrote a lot of documents outlining and clarifying the game's flow and mechanics. I did the content writing for both the educational side of things, and in-game character dialogue. I did level design and terrain modelling as well as all the audio. I also helped in testing and bug fixing...finding solutions to issues we ran into.

Findings

As Water Works is aimed at 10-14 years old kids, and was designed to enrich an educational program. Dealing with educators to ensure it ticked all the boxes was an great experience. It's a very exciting age group to target as they start to fall out of touch with 'childish' games and look for something slightly more sophisticated. At the same time, attention spans and reading abilities are still developing, so these need to be taken into consideration too.
