Brief

The Romley Court team really wanted to push the concept of games as interactive narrative. We challenged ourselves to come up with a story and portray it through a game environment.

Description

Romley Court is an explorative, first-person narrative-driven experience that unearths the far from glamorous life of Regency Britain. You play the wife of a successful public figure, but the relationship is stale, the children you bore are looked on as inferior and you yearn to break away from the social constraints of high aristocracy.

Romley Court is based in a large Georgian Regency manor house. The player discovers her story through set pieces and audio dialogue. The player encounters surreal settings and situations to enforce the sense of a nervous breakdown.

My role

I had several tasks during this project. I was predominantly the game builder, marshalling the implementation of assets, doing the environment/lighting design and building the level in UDK. This included adding in all the events and triggers in Unreal kismet.

Findings

We struggled at first with guiding the player through the level, but some visual clues and levels of intrigue helped. Working with a script writer and voice actors was brilliant!
